Saramago Lost

I know I can't expect more than 87 years, but my favorite writer, the remarkable communist atheist genius Jose Saramago has died. Please honor this magnificent man and do yourself a favor in the process by reading one of his books. Blindness is my absolute favorite book ever. I was once told that loving that book was "sick and twisted." Blindness is not sick and twisted, it is an incisive exploration of human cruelty, executed by a virtuoso.

You should read The Gospel According to Jesus Christ just for the unbearably delightful beastiality discussion. Yup, he could make beastiality delightful (and practical!)

As they said of Marlow in Shakespeare in Love, "A great light has gone out."
